After last week victory over Tusser Ranger FC, we were determined to continue our form. We went into this match confidently as we had beaten them 3-2 last season. We started the match brightly and took things in our control. In the 10th minute, Weiqiang flipped the ball over the keeper and slotted the ball into the net but the referee decided that Weiqiang had lifted his leg too high and thus the goal was disallowed. But we did not let that affect us and we continued to play our game. Weiqiang was being fouled in the 15th minute, and Hazmi converted the free kick from 30 yards and Hornet FC was 1-0 up. With 1 goal up, Hornet's played with more confident and in the 20th minute, Hornet FC took a 2-0 lead. Ruiqiang fighted off a defender's challenge and before releasing the ball to Weiqiang. Weiqiang charged into the box before crossing to the far post for Khairul to score from close range. Mean Machines FC did not let the setbacks get into them and continued to attack us but they were stopped by our defense or our in-form goalkeeper, Haikal. We managed to hold on to the 2-0 lead into the 2nd half.

In the 2nd half, we continued to play attacking football, but a poor referee's decision led to us conceding a goal and had Zaini sent off. In the 65th minutes, the ball went over the sidelines and while Arzme and Wan thought it was a throw in to us, the Mean Machines player sweep the ball up front, and to our shock, the referee allowed play to continue. Their striker took a shot that when past Haikal, and in a deperate clearance, Zaini used his hand to "save" the ball. He was being red-carded and Mean Machines FC was awarded a penalty. Their striker slotted the ball in calmly. With this goal, Mean Machines had a chance to fight back and they attacked us with rains of shots. With 1 man down, we struggled to hold onto the lead. Mean Machines FC managed to got their equalizer. However, we did not gave up fighting and we wanted to win the match. We created alot of chances too. In the 88th minutes, Ruiqiang won a free-kick on the right midfield and up stepped Hazmi again. His shot hit the cross bar and Weiqiang was there to score the rebound. 3-2 and wild celebration by Hornet FC. We fought hard in the last 5 minutes, and we created alot more chances while holding on to the attacks from Mean Machines FC. Final whislte, 3-2 to Hornet FC.

After Match Thoughts: Well done guys for another great match. Too bad was that in 2 matches, we had 2 players sent off. No more red card in our future matches as you can see, for both matches, after we got player sent off, we started conceding. So, guys, let work hard and fight hard together while maintaining 11 players on the field.

AFL Match against Tusser Ranger FC

Score: Hornet FC 2:1 Tusser Ranger FC

Finally after 3 weeks of cancelling of matches, we are playing against Tusser Ranger FC for the 1st AFL game. We went into the game with high confidence and morale. In the opening exchanges, we had the upper hand, with Ruiqiang and Akram having chances to take the lead, but were all saved by their keeper, Desmond. Tusser Ranger created a few chances but could not scored as our new backline stand tall. At the half-hour mark, Ruiqiang holded the long punt from Haikal and he pasted to Akram and he released Weida down the left flank. He dribbled past 2 defenders before slotting the ball past the goalkeeper for the Hornets to take a 1-0 lead.

With this goal, our morale was even higher and we continued to attack them with our fast pace game. Tusser Ranger had a few chances but were well saved by Haikal or denied by our defense. The match went into halftime with the score 1-0 to Hornet's favour.

The 2nd half saw Amin replacing Ruiqiang to lead the attack. 2 minutes after the restart, Amin was sent through down the centre and he was in a 1-1 situation with the keeper, but a defender managed to clear the ball when Amin was about to pull the trigger. From the resultant corner, Hazmi was there to volley the ball into the net. 2-0. Hornet FC was controlling the game well and Tusser Ranger could not get past our defense. Ruiqiang came on again to the game, and he had few chances to add to the scoreline but he could not take his chances. with 3 minutes left on the clock, Mirza, our leftback was given his 2nd yellow card and was given his marching order. From the resultant free-kick, Tusser Ranger managed to pull a goal back. Though conceding the goal, we were determined not to lose the game. We continued to attack and not lose the possession of the ball. We managed to maintain the 1 goal lead till the final whistle.

AFL match against Meirda FC

Score: Hornet FC 6:1 Meirda FC

A hatrick by Ruiqiang, a bruce by Weiqiang and a goal by Hazmi gave Hornet FC a 6-1 win over Meirda FC today.

The match was almost postponed when part of the field was taken up by a stage which was meant for the lantern festival. But both teams did not want to postpone the match and thus we tore the stage down ourselves.

Hornet FC dominated the match from the start and in the 5^th minute, Ti Siang’s header off a corner by Kenny hit the crossbar and in the 8^th minute, Ruiqiang, after breaking the offside trap hit a volley against the post again. However, 2minutes later, Weiqiang, in a wonderful form, scored for Hornet FC following a throw in by Amin. In the 14^th minute, Ruiqiang had a chance to extend the lead but his shot was blocked by the goalkeeper. However, in the 18^th minute, Kenny was fouled in the penalty box and up stepped Ruiqiang and he sent the goalkeeper the wrong direction to give Hornet FC a 2-0 lead. With 2-0 down, Meirda started to play rough by going for the legs instead of the ball and Ruiqiang, Weiqiang and Amin were all hurted in the process.

At the half-hour mark, Kenny dribbled into the box and his shot was pushed away by the goalkeeper but Ruiqiang was there to slot in the rebound. Hornet FC was in total control of the match. In the 36^th minute, Hazmi’s shot from outside the penalty box was denied once again by the post. Kenny and Ruiqiang both had chances to increase the lead but was denied by their goalkeeper and the defense.

Hornet FC continued to dominate the match in the 2^nd half. In the 50^th minute, a brilliant through ball by Kenny found Weiqiang and he passed to Ruiqiang to complete his hat-trick. Meirda FC’s right-back argued with the referee that he was being fouled. The referee had had enough of him as he had been arguing with him through out the match. The referee showed him a straight red card. There was no way back for Meirda FC. Tempers blew hot for Meirda FC and Dominic was being elbowed in his face. Surprisingly, this had gone unnoticed by the referee until Dominic was turning and twisting on the floor. In the 60^th minute, Dominic was being fouled again and the referee blew advantage as Weiqiang had got the ball and he continued to attack. Meirda FC’s players were stunned by the decision, thus leaving spaces for Weiqiang to dribble through and he slotted in his 2^nd goal of the day. Dominic’s ankle was hurted and he was substituted out. Meirda FC pulled 1 back when their midfielder kneed the ball into the net in the 70^th minute. However, Hazmi, after breaking the offside trap, toe-poked the ball past the goalkeeper to restore the 5 goals lead. Kenny had a great chance to score when he volleyed a corner into the goalkeeper’s arm.

AFL match against North-East Burghley FC

Opponent: North-East Burghley FC

Score: North-East Burghley FC 4:3 Hornet FC

Hornet FC was on a high note after pulling off a surprise victory against Mean Machines FC last week. Although with a poor turnout of just 11 players, we were confident going into the match.

Ruiqiang, after missing the last 2 matches, had 2 early chances inside 5 minutes after twice breaking the offside trap but both chances found the side netting. Ruiqiang continued to pose problems down the right but his crosses could not find Seow Chuan and the rest. Weiqiang, Hazmi and Kenny took control of the midfield well but it was North-East Burghley that took the lead when a break through down the middle freed their striker and he lobbed Boon Chen. But 1 minute later, Hazmi did a Steven Gerard when he volleyed the ball into the net from outside of the penalty box for the equalizer. Both sides continued to fight hard and the match was evenly matched.

In the 51st minute, Amin saw his free-kick hit the crossbar. North-East Burghley upped their attack and they lobbed Boon Chen to take the lead again. They further increased their lead to 3-1 when a cross found their striker unmarked and he did a scissor kick into the net. Ruiqiang continued to break their offside traps constantly but the last passes were not there. Weiqiang decided to take the game in his hands and 2 through balls by Amin and Hazmi found Weiqiang and both times, he scored to take the match into a draw. Hornet FC began to dominate the match, however a counter-attack saw North-East Burghley took the lead again when their striker lobbed Boon Chen once again in the 80th minute. Hornet FC threw everyone into the attack and it was all Hornet FC’s game with North-East Burghley defending the lead. Kenny, Hazmi and Weiqiang all had brilliant chances to score but North-East Burghley’s defense and their goalkeeper hold firm not to lose goal. Hornet FC rained 12 shots and had 5 corners in the last 10 minutes. In the dying seconds, a corner by Chuan Seng found Ruqiang open and with the goal at his mercy, he skied the shot. A pity for Hornet FC in a match where they could had won if they took their chances well.

After match thoughts: We must really take our chances when it comes. Tough matches like this is decided by the team that can take their chances.

AFL match against Mean Machines FC

Opponent: Mean Machines FC

Score: Hornet FC 5-4 Mean Machines FC

Today’s match is between the 2nd and 3rd placing teams in the league. It is expected to be an exciting match with Hornet FC wanting to take revenge on Mean Machines FC as we had lost the 1st meeting 5-1.

We were the underdogs going into this match but we played with all our hearts out. Although we had only 11 players available today, our spirits were high and we want to win them in order to close our gaps with them. With the champion basically out of our reach, we were all aiming to get the 2nd placing.

Seow Chuan gave us the lead in the 10th minute, after Mean Machines FC had attacked us from the start of the match. Weiqiang had dribbled to the bye line and he squared the ball into the path of Seow Chuan, who made no mistakes to tap the ball into the empty net. However, the lead was short lived as Mean Machines FC scored twice in the 20th and 35th minute to take over the lead. Despite the setbacks, we did not let out heads down and we continued to play hard. Both sides created a lot of goalmouth chances. In the 42nd minute, we finally got our deserved equalizer when Chuan Seng broke the offside trap and he dribbled past the goalkeeper before running into the net.

Mean Machines FC took the lead again against the run of play in the 49th minute and they extended their lead further to 4-2 in the 62nd minute. Instead of giving up, we continued to fight hard and in the 75th minute, Weiqiang took a quick corner to Chuan Seng whose pass found Yusrizal. He dribbled past a defender before volleying the ball into the goal. Sensing a fightback is on the card, we upped our attack and 7 minutes later, a upfield pass by Amin found Weiqiang and with a turn, he volleyed the ball into the net, leaving the goalkeeper with no chances at all.

Mean Machines FC and Hornet FC fought hard to get the lead and the match saw penalty of goalmouth actions but both side could not score. As the match is going towards a draw, we were rewarded a corner in the 88th minute. Razali swing a cross to the far post and Hazmi was at the receiving end to head the winning goal into the net. Mean Machines FC attacked harder and threw more players up front, but we managed to hold on till the final whistle.

A great victory for Hornet FC and big credits to both teams for a great and exciting match. As the league is drawing to a close with 5 games remaining, this victory is important for us to keep us in the fight for 2nd spot.

AFL match against Sunday FC

Opponent: Sunday FC

Score: Hornet FC 2-3 Sunday FC

Today’s match is against the no.1 team in the League table – Sunday FC. We were very regretful that we had allowed them to stage a comeback to earn a draw after taking a 4-1 lead in our 1st meeting. We were very determined to win this match so as to stop them from running away with the champion. It was an evenly matched match and we gave them a hard time but in the end, we still could not stop them from winning the match 3-2.

We suffered an early setback when Mervin’s attempted clearance went into the back of our net. Sunday FC’s striker had did some great work down the right flank and after dribbling past Dominic, his low cross reached Mervin and as he tried to clear the ball, it somehow curled into the net. However, we continued to fight hard as we know that we can match them. In 1 attack down the left, Kenny found himself free in the box and he slotted the ball past the goalkeeper. We continued to attack in hoping to take the lead, but Sunday FC’s captain had been dominating the midfield and he made it hard for us during the match.

In the 50th minute, Sunday FC’s captain attacked down the right and he cut into the center before sending a shot from outside the penalty box into the net. Both sides continued to attack with Hazmi matching their captain in terms of ball winning and passing of the ball. We created chances in front of the goal but the strikers did not take their chances well. Against the run of play in the 70th minute, Sunday striker extended the lead to 3-1. It was a goal that came as a result of us pushing players too high up in search of the equalizer. We did not give up and continued to attack. In the 82nd minute, after some good work down the left by Kenny, his pass found Weiqiang and he volleyed the ball into the net. We continued to p[lay hard to get the equalizer but Sunday FC managed to hold onto the lead till the end of the game.

After match thoughts: It was a great game for us but a pity that we had lost. I believed that next season we will be able to challenge high up if we can be more consistent in our play.

AFL match against AC United FC

Opponent: AC United FC

Score: Hornet FC 2-3 AC United FC

Today, our turnout for the match was poor with only 12 players attending the match. AC United is a good team and at the start of the match, they took control of most of the match. We fought hard and managed to pin them back in their half with our usual fast paced game. In the 10th minute, Ruiqiang almost took the lead for Hornet FC after he rounded the goalkeeper, but a defender managed to rush in in time to clear the ball off the line. 5 minutes later, a great cross by Weiqiang found Yusrizal lanking in the box and he sent a half volley into the net. AC United upped the attack after this setback, and within 5 minutes, they found the equalizer through a corner. In the 38th minute, a clash between AC United striker and Boon Chen saw the latter injuring his eye. Boon Chen had to be replaced by Amin. AC United kept attacking but found Razali unbeatable. Razali had an outstanding performance today as you can see him everywhere in the defense line.

In the 2nd half, Seow Chuan had several chances but failed to convert them, or was saved by the goalkeeper. Ruiqiang, Weiqiang and Kenny all pushed forward but could not break down their defense too. In the 52nd minute, AC United scored a beautiful lob over Amin to make it 2-1. Hornet FC started to push even further up in search of the equalizer but this caused the defense to be weakened and AC United scored another goal in the 60th minute. Hornet FC attacked desperately and it was all Hornet FC’s attack in the last 30 minutes. Hornet FC scored a free kick by Razali in the 65th minute and we kept throwing players up but in the end, no goals were scored. A great game played by both team.

After match thoughts: We were unlucky to lose Boon Chen so early in the game, and without Amin in defense, we had some difficulties dealing with their attack. A great game for Razali in defense. Keep up the good work.

Hornet FC was formed on Labour Day, 1st May 2006 by Ruiqiang and Amin. Our idea is to get our enthusiastic friends and cousins together and get a good run-out on the field. We had wanted to play soccer regularly but there is no one to start the team, so Ruiqiang and Amin took the initiative in gathering people. At the same time, Amateur Football League (AFL) is recruiting teams to join their league. We were all looking forward to play well in the league. Our target for the season was a mid-table finish as we were a much newer team compared to most of the teams in the league that have great histories.

Our logo is a Hornet with a football, which was designed by Dominic Ang who was a designer. We chose Hornet is because of the aggressiveness the Hornet have and Hornet is a hardworking creature too. These are the things that we want our team to be, aggressive and hardworking. On our jersey, as we are a self-sponsored and non-profitable organization, we tried to get the cheapest but yet good quality type. We went to a lot of shops around Queensway shopping center and Peninsular Plaza to choose and finally, we decided on KELME Gold and White.

With everything in place, we were very excited on playing in the league. During the duration of the league, we were glad to recruit 2 former national under 18âs players, Hazmi and Ruzaini, and with their help, we managed to meet our target of a mid-table finish. At the end of the season, some players began to leave the team. Ruiqiang and Amin had to recruit new players in to replace those that had left. We managed to recruit some former NYPâs friends and some of Ruiqiangâs colleagues in camp. Till date, we have 18 players and we were looking forward to next AFL season.
